Post Christmas Post: The Christmas Tree
Since the last entry I have in here was when I was waiting for us to buy a tree, it’s but proper, I think, that I follow up on that entry and show you THE tree. I know… too late, eh? But what the heck, I need to blog about it for journalling’s sake. So here goes.
We got the tree the day after Thanksgiving day. We knew we wanted a slim one and not t00 big, but big enough to make the house look very special during the time we have it up. We went to Home Depot and started to look around. My darling husband (DH) found this one and I have to agree with him, it will look really nice.
It wasn’t that easy to bring home the tree either. DH had to take down the seat at the back of the van and we made sure we were careful while we were loading it inside the van – too much needles, too hard to take off the seats. And it was a weight, too, carrying it inside the house.
After that, I brought all the stuff I’ve been buying little by little out in the living room and started putting in the lights first. I admit, I am soooo picky. I did it myself to make sure that I could get the lights inside the tree and that 95% of the branches would be lighted. In fact, we even had to make a short trip back to Home Depot because I ran out of lights 2/3 of the way to the most bottom part. And I didn’t want to start all over again from the top. It would be way much easier just to go do the trip.
When Are The Trees Coming?
I’ve been very busy the past couple of weeks. Christmas is just around the corner and I’m very excited! Hubbie and I are putting up our very first Christmas tree together. And being the obsessive person that I am, I would look at the internet no end on sample designs, how much it will end up being (cause if it gets too expensive, I’d scratch the idea), would the dollar stores have it, and other worries a tight-wad like me thinks about. I want a beautiful tree but I don’t want to break the bank for it. It just doesn’t seem right splurging so much – considering baby Jesus was born poor.
So I’ve been scouring ebay, the dollar stores, Michael’s and Jo-ann’s, and the second-hand thrift stores. I’ve been scoring very good finds on ebay. My first rule tho is that I have to make sure I get a good bang for the buck. Nothing more than $10 if I can help it and shipping & handling should not cost an arm and a leg either. Cause if it does, I must as well buy them new at a local store nearby. And if they’re more than $10, it’s got to be a whole lot of them. Just last night I’ve received my package of about 25+ pieces of angel ornaments for just $2o including shipping and handling. They’re all beautiful, I wouldn’t be able to buy them all for just that much money. So that, for me, is a steal. I’d show them all to you if I didn’t bring them back inside their box. I got scared that I might break them before I could even use them.
I’ve also been reviving the wreaths I found in our basement and some that I bought from the thrift store for just $5 a piece. My husband had to throw away almost all the Christmas decorations they had. (Sort of purging oneself of an ugly past.) But that fits me just fine. I’d really want this to be a start of a new tradition for us. None of the sad Christmases ever again – as long as I can help it.
I really enjoy being able to find good items from the thrift shops and dollar stores. And I enjoy it more when I can make something really beautiful out of them. That’s what I did when I redesigned our Christmas wreaths. I used the items I got from my discount loot and made (I should say so myself) pretty wreaths, good enough to give to friends and family. In fact, the materials of the wreath I plan to give my MIL came from those stores. I found a nice angel topper for just $5 from Goodwill and the poinsettias and ribbons I used, I got from a nearby dollar store. The result: a magical wreath that’s one of a kind.
I also made a wreath that’s really fun. I plan to give it to one of my friends whose 2 younger kids are of ages 8 and 6. I’m sure they’ll get a kick out of the santa clause/snowman stuffed ornament I decorated it with.
For hubbie and I, I have 3 wreaths that I did. One that’s of bronze and gold colors, a second one of fuschia and green and a third one of purely purple and fuschia. I have this idea of creating an ‘emerald-like’ christmas tree with lots and lot of angels and ribbons all around. I got very pretty gold balls from Home Depot and the rest of the balls, I got from the dollar store. I also got some pretty poinsettias in bronze and purple from Jo-ann’s plus nice purple and gold ribbons from Michael. But I also got a lot of ribbons from the dollar store to make bows out of. It’s just that the ones from Michaels come in huge rolls – enough to go around the tree so many times.
I plan to go to Tuesday Morning (again), my other favorite store. I wanted to get a nice tree topper that’s priced wayyyyyy below its market price. Tuesday Morning is like Gabrielle, Marshall’s or Ross. They’ve got items that have been discontinued and are really cheaper than when these items first went out. The thing about Tuesday Morning is that their items are really elegant. You’d be surprised at what they sell.
So this year, I’m really psyched for Christmas. I am in the best of spirits and I’m loving the anticipation and all the preparations. I’ve even planned out the foodies that I’m giving away this year – something that my friends and their families will enjoy eating. Hmmm… something out of the ordinary that they’d surely enjoy this holiday season.
And so while I wait for the tree vendors to bring their stuff up for grabs, I’ll be preparing and hoarding all the wonderful things I plan to do and give out this Christmas. Can’t wait…
My Girls
I’ve been sooooo busy this summer. Since my husband and I got married, this might be the first summer that saw us really enjoying every day of it from beginning to end that it just went by so fast for us.
We had a chance to go to Virginia, take a trip down to Florida with friends, went camping and picnic-ing at the beautiful state parks here in Maryland. Not to mention all the get-togethers, the dinners, the little what-nots here and there with our friends. It was indeed a wonderful summer. And we both look forward to more summers like this. (Rome and Italy and the Philippines next year, maybe?)
Anyways, this will explain why I haven’t been too good in updating this blog. As much as I want to do so, there’s just too many things happening that maintaining many blogs during these days could be quite time-consuming. Altho I’ve been trying to update my Filipino blog as often as I can. Its only because more people know me from that blog. They bug me when I don’t update it as often.
But school has started and we’re slowly (despite protests from my husband) inching our way towards fall. As proof, it was a cooler summer night by comparison last night and the weatherman says it continues on tonight. So maybe… just maybe, I’d have more time now to update my 10,000 and 1 blogs while I wait for next spring to come.
Also, I have 2 girls who are also keeping me away from blogging these past few weeks. I’ve been sewing dresses for them and I just can’t stop! I’ve been taking pictures of them and I want to share them with you. You’ll be seeing more of them from now on. I know my friends are all having a blythe overload what with all the photos of them all over. But I just LOVE them and I am a little bit obsessed with them right now. All I can think of are their dopey faces and what else I can make for them and how else to photograph them. So here they are. Hope you’ll enjoy them too.
Early Signs of Spring
The temps had been slowly going up. Nothing drastic, nothing weird – just the normal change towards a very wonderful season. Even the evenings are very agreeable – not too warm but not very cold anymore. How else can you describe it? My spring is here!
Hubbie’s house sits on a lot with a backyard rich with full-grown trees and flowers. The dining room is adjacent to the deck and so during the days we would sit and just watch the birds flying around. We have a mommy and daddy blue jay and a mommy and daddy oriole that we always see hopping from one tree to the other. In the early mornings, if our windows are open, you can actually hear the baby birds chirping. We also hear a pecking sound which we know comes from a woodpecker, altho we haven’t seen it anywhere – yet. On my first spring here in Maryland, we even saw two vultures taking a rest on the neighbor’s roof at the back. Honestly, seeing those buzzards really gave me the creeps, they’re not my favorite creatures in the world.
And hubbie’s daffodils are all out! Really, really, REALLY beautiful! Hubbie planted them all around the house and it’s very refreshing to see them. True as a lot of people say, when you see the daffodils in bloom, you would have a feeling of a promise of a new life – no matter how cold and severe a winter would be.
Hubbie and I have been taking pictures left and right. Thanks to the telephoto lens my dad gave me, we were able to take pictures of the birds even from afar! I can’t take being near birds, (no thanks to my bird-o-phobia, hahaha) so my gift from my dad was sooo cool to use.
So anyways, here are some pictures I took. I’ll be taking some more in the coming days. I just have to rest a bit today tho ’cause my whole left arm hurts so bad because of a bad fall on the stair last night.
But I hope it’s just a slightly bad fall and nothing really serious.
It’s Springtime!

And just like that, springtime is here! It’s still cold but the temperature is slowing climbing – and the rain has come! I like rains during spring cause it means, hopefully, that the summer wouldn’t be that hot, or at least, not that dry. The daffodils my husband planted are blossoming – not all of them yet, but they’re slowing showing. I’m also seeing a lot of cherry blossoms around. Hmmm.. I wonder if hubs and I can squeeze in a time to see the cherry blossom festival in DC. Soon, the tulips will be coming out. My dear hubbie said that this could be a good year for the tulips because the winter temps have been consistent – no nosedives on the temp scale to confuse the flowers that it’s time to come out.
I can’t wait to see the tulips my husband planted this year. Last year he uprooted this bush on the corner of our front yard that was getting to be a nuisance. He also transplanted some of the large bromeliads to our backyard and in their places, he planted a lot of tulip bulbs. And I’m really counting on seeing them all come out a few weeks from now. This is the time of year that I love taking pictures of the flowers in our garden.
Even for hubs, this is his favorite time of the year. He looks forward to all the planting he’d be doing – both in our flower and our vegetable gardens. Altho we might be doing a little bit of cleaning this year in the yard. (God, please give us the time to do so
. We had a walk around the neighborhood one night and while we looked at some of our neighbors’ front yards, we decided that we want to downgrade on some of the “shrubbery” in ours. Just to give our elevation a “neater” view.
It would be a big feat to do some new landscaping, tho. But with my husband’s green thumb, I guess we have a better chance of accomplishing the task.
But just in case we can’t get it done, I wonder how much TruGreen would charge for the job? (Trust me, I’m not really that good with plants but I do know a thing or two that could be a big help, ha ha ha).
Home Sweet Home
It’s a bad real estate market right now. After a big soar in the house sales and activities the past couple of years, the business plummeted so dramatically. Altho, it’s always been known that sooner or later the bubble will burst. But we probably didn’t expect that it would dive this hard. A really big “ouch” for everyone connected to the biz and for those who had those “changing” interest rates. I know a couple of our friends who lost their houses or are about to because of the fluctuating interest rates they had on their loans. (Can’t remember exactly what that’s called. Must ask hubbie what the term is.)
I wonder if one of the reason for the recession we’re having right now is because of the unbalanced priorities the government has of where to channel their energies (and their money). Like, if the government started concentrating on the deteriorating economy when it was starting to go down rather than putting in more money in their “military projects”, would we be experiencing this right now? Or at least, it won’t be this bad?
‘Sad when you hear of people losing their houses or letting them go to foreclosures because they just can’t afford the high interest rates or they lost their jobs because of the retrenchments happening. A couple of my friends have moved from California to Maryland because the real estate lending company they used to work at had to cut down on people. And there isn’t much work in the Golden State right now, so they’re moving back east. Good for me, tho, cause I really miss my “homies” so this time, I can see them without breaking my bank account
On one hand tho, this is the best time to buy a house. That is, if you get approved to avail of a housing loan. It’s specially good for renters. Because of the low prices, they have a bigger chance of owning the house of their dreams now. But if you’ve got a house (like hubbie does) and you need to sell it before you buy a new one, this is still not the good time to do so. It’s even harder if you have to do a lot of repairs to the house to get it as presentable as you can for the buyers. There’s just a stiff competition out there right now.
So since the unbelievable gas hike is really putting a toll on our sanity plus hub’s house being fully paid (yup, blood, sweat and tears he put in in paying for the mortgage by himself all these years), we’re really considering buying our own house and thinking of just renting out his house for awhile. And since this time around it’s going to be OUR house and we’re both equally going to pay for it, I’m going to make sure that repairs do not pile on top of each other. I’m thinking, the best way to avoid really major repairs (and, consequently, huge house repair bills) would be to make sure that the small carings be done right away. (I wonder if its good to invest on warranties, like those American Home Sheild type. Hmmmm…)
But yeah, we’re off looking for a new place again. The gas prices is making it too unreasonable for us to be living in Baltimore when my work is in Annapolis. Lucky for hubs cause he works in downtown Baltimore, so Annapolis would just be the same commute as where we’re currently at. I’m actually excited to have a house we can now call “ours” – meaning mine and hubs. I’m now dreaming of what to put in, what the whole theme would be. (“Moroccan” really is a strong leaning for me.)
So if we both buckle down and get things going, Christmas might see us in a new house already. That’s just sweet
New Home Bug
So the new home bug is still after me!
I know… this isn’t the best time to buy a new home if you also have a house that you need to sell in order to get buy that new home (hmmmm… that was a winded sentence
Altho one needs to be pratical and just try to make the current house as beautiful as one can, one can still dream of owning a new home, one thinks (this one sounds so Bridget Jones, ha ha ha!)
But anyways, for those of you who don’t have to worry of having to sell an existing abode, this is definitely one of the better times to look for that dream castle. The real estate market is on the downscale (and may continue to be so for the next 2 more years, I’ve heard), and as long as you’ve got the credentials to show that you can afford to pay, then go ahead and pursue your dreams! In fact, the shopping part is one of the enjoyable parts of the house-buying routine – it is for me, at least. You get to see model homes, you drive around the neighborhoods of houses for sale, you get to go inside and look around some of them. And if you don’t want to go out, there’s always the real estate websites that will give you a tour of the houses with pictures and even vidoes of the inside and out. Why is this exciting for me? I’m a shop-a-holic and even window shopping excites me!
Some of you might want to do the house-shopping yourself, which is actually ok. Some of you might want to eliminate the hassle of going thru houses that you weren’t really interested in seeing had you known some other facts, and so would want to hire a relocation realtor, which is fine also. Either way, it’s really up to you.
But once you’ve found THE ONE, and the mortgage home loan has been finalized, all the papers have been signed, the hand-shaking ritual between you and the realtor (or former owner) has been done, it’s time to gear up and get ready to move to a new house. Now, this part, I’m not that excited about anymore. And I’m sure I’m not the only one who isn’t very enthusiastic about this.
It’s not only that you have to pack your stuff and put them in boxes and all that (think about all those plates, pots, pans, and pantry stock… NOW you know what I mean). You also have to get rid of things you don’t use anymore, go thru every nook and cranny of your house to make sure that you’ve got them all cleaned. Plus you have to clean up your current digs because if you don’t you either will a) have to give up a portion or all of your downpayment (if you currently rent a house or apartment) as payment to the landlord for cleaning up your unit(it’s in your contract) or b) the buyers of your house would have to discount that cleanup bill from the money they still owe you. And besides, you don’t want anyone to know really how much garbage (not to mention, what kind) you’ve accumulated all these years.
Another thing you have to be careful about picking are the movers. You can actually do the moving yourself – rent a moving van and ask friends and family to help you move. But if you don’t want to or you’ve got really huge stuff you need to move, then it’s time to go on the internet to look for movers and ask for mover quotes.
So once you’ve gotten your new house ready and you’ve finally settled in – the plates, pots and pans all neatly stacked up in the cupboards and cabinets, the bathroom thingies have all been kept away, the clothes have all been stored (hopefully in your new walk-in closet), then it’s time to relax and savor the aroma of a new chapter in your life
Keeping Your American Dream Well-maintained
I’ve told you about us wanting to get a house soon enough. I know having a place to call your own is part of the American Dream. It would always be a good feeling knowing that you have your own place. It makes you feel proud. Makes you feel very grown-up that, at last, you’re now a responsible adult and that someone trusted you enough to loan you a huge sum of money to own a piece of that dream. J And because of that sense of pride, you always make sure that the house you now own is in tip-top shape, clean and presentable. That’s what a responsible homeowner does.
You also don’t want to ignore the bits and pieces of problems in the house because they might turn into something bigger – and consequently, more expensive to repair. And when you get to have your own home, that’s when you realize that house repairs aren’t cheap either.
I once had a friend who almost had a heart attack when he found out how much a plumber charges to fix a small (or what he thinks is just small) problem in his kitchen sink. And I have to agree with him, these people do charge an arm and a leg for their services. And I think that’s why it’s always recommended to have a home warranty – just like American Home Sheild.
It’s companies like them who would be able to make home repairs a little bit easier to take.
Think about it. If you’ve invested a lot on your home, you don’t want to leave anything to chance with your home repairs.
In My Little Garden
Hubbie is a gardening addict. He finds solace in tilling the soil, planting his vegetables and seeing his plants grow. I don’t have a green thumb. I can only help him water his “babies”, and harvest the produce.
But I’ve always enjoyed these small activities. I get excited with seeing the buds of new fruits or new flowers coming out. Spring would always be meaningful for me because the mornings always greet me with a view of daffodils and tulips in the garden. The first signs of life after the few months of the cold winter. Hubby always told me that the daffodils mean a lot to him – it will always be a remembrance that even in the bleakest and coldest of the winters in his life, spring will always come, giving him a promise of new hopes, a new life. And that’s why I have started to love the daffodils, also. It began to symbolize this new life with a husband I will love and be with for the rest of my life – despite the fact that we‘ve met late in our lives.
Later on during the summer, I would see lilies, dahlias, clematises, violets, pansies sprouting all around the house. I get excited when I see tomatoes, bitter melons, string beans, squashes coming out. I already plan on what to cook with the bounties from the garden.
Even way up to the end of fall, we would still have a lot of gifts coming from my husband’s garden. The fall flowers and vegetables continue to give our garden color until the first flakes of snow come.
And I know that when we do move to a new house soon, I would make sure we would still have a sizeable garden for my husband to continue with his hobby.
Altho it isn’t really a breeze to tend a garden. You do need to know what kind of soil you have, which part of the day does the sun shine on your garden, how much sun you get – these are things you should consider when picking out the plants you want to take care of. You also have to know how much fertilizer to put in, on which plants to do it with and all other stuff. If you’re planning on having your own garden and don’t know how to get it going, there’s a lot of establishments that would be able to give you a headstart. There are services like Tru Green that can help you with that.
I suddenly realized… with the past entries I’ve been writing, I really do miss spring so much now…

Home Sweet Home
My husband and I have been planning to move to another house since last year.
We wanted to get a house in the Anne Arundel County – probably in the Crownsville area. Unfortunately, with the real estate market bubble burst we’ve put that dream on hold. We wouldn’t be able to get a good price with the house we’re living in right now so it would defeat the purpose of going to a new house.
Because of this, we’ve just decided to renovate the house we’re in right now so that we would be able to command a better price for it once the market normalizes.
Since the house we live in now was made in the 70s, there’s a lot of features in this 4-level split home that you wouldn’t find in new houses anymore. Firstly, there’s a really good hardwood floor underneath the carpet. We decided to take out the worn-out carpet in the living room to reveal a very beautiful wooden flooring. We also took out the old and ugly paint in the foyer, living room and kitchen and replaced it with a more sedated and neutral light mocha and eggshell-white. We’re planning on installing new base boards and crown mouldings also.
With the help of my husband’s brother and his wife, we’ve already renovated the laundry room – new vinyl tiles, new paint job and pretty soon, new washer and dryer. We’re also planning on setting up a spot in the laundry room where we can hang our delicate clothes that we didn‘t want to put in the dryer.
While we’re doing the laundry room, we’re also tiling our foyer and kitchen. At first, we were just planning on putting on new vinyl flooring. But when we visited Lowe’s, we found out that they were selling a simple but really classy ceramic tile design. We decided to install that on our kitchen and foyer .
Everything is still in the works, but it’s getting to be really promising once it’s done. I’m really excited. Once we’ve cleaned up and the construction dust has been cleaned out, I will be posting pictures to show you all what we’ve labored on for almost a year now.
I know, I know… you’re probably wondering if we’ve also considered the “internal health” of the house. Of course! We’re planning on putting on new mouldings around the window to lessen the consumption of heat in the winter and coolnees in the summer. Plus we’re also checking the water tanks and checking for termites and all other parasites. Just in case, we do find some critters in the house, we know the only weapon against them would be “Terminix”. People have told me that they really work good.
So the real ultimate goal underneath all these is that we’re making sure that the house will be in very good condition once the market gets back to normal and we’d be able to command a good price for the house – something meaty we could put in for the next house we will live in.
