Gold Medalist Michael Phelps

So, Michael Phelps, the great 8-gold medal olympian of 2008, was caught inhaling (sweet Mary Jane?) from a bong.   This caused quite a stir when the news and the picture came out.  Which lead people to think, “what do they do now about all his million-dollar endorsements???”

Ok, so he’s not perfect.  And “he’s only 23″ insinuating that he’s young. (But isn’t 23 considered an adult age????). I bet that he has done this a couple of times before, he just hasn’t been caught till now.

Popular and famous personalities like him always go around with an entourage, no matter how few they may be.  What were his people doing during that time?  All having a good time, too?  I guess someone dropped the ball and forgot to tell this “young kid” that he’s not supposed to do this lest a paparazzi snaps a picture of him inhaling from the bong.

I know… he’s just human and he’s just doing what some kids his age (might) do.  But I think, when you get to be of a certain stature, you don’t have a choice but to act more discreetly than most “ordinary” people.  More so, acting responsibly should be a priority, not an option, most specially if you have millions of dollars riding on your good name.  He doesn’t have a choice – it’s the prize of his fame and fortune.

Good thing his still has his endorsements and they’re all standing behind him.  (Altho I’ve heard that one or two slipped silently away, but it’s also probably because of the downsliding economy.)

This isn’t the first time Michael was caught being less stellar than his “super sports star status” (try saying that a couple of time as fast as you can), tho.  So basically, it’s strike 2 for the swimmer.   Tsk…

Phelps came out with this statement:

“I engaged in behavior which was regrettable and demonstrated bad judgment. I’m 23 years old and despite the successes I’ve had in the pool, I acted in a youthful and inappropriate way, not in a manner people have come to expect from me. For this, I am sorry. I promise my fans and the public it will not happen again.”

… because the next time I try to get high, I’m going to do it on my bed while watching my collection of porn.
